Trustees approve McGraw Hill algebra I after pilot and rubric review

Teachers and principal Greg Barnes presented the Algebra I adoption process to the board and recommended a seven-year adoption of McGraw Hill’s Algebra I materials after piloting Savvas and McGraw Hill and applying the state’s adoption rubric.
"We were able to land on our outcome of wanting to do a 7 year adoption, for McGraw Hill veil algebra 1," Greg Barnes said, summarizing the committee’s recommendation. Teachers emphasized three evaluation metrics: standards alignment, teacher experience and student experience. One teacher praised the ALEKS platform integrated with McGraw Hill as a strong online complement: "The ALEKS program that is involved in McGraw Hill...that was really powerful," a teacher said.
Board members asked whether the change to an algebra–geometry–algebra 2 sequence affected grade-level placements; presenters said the 6–7–8 progression would not change for most students and that accelerated students would continue to have options. Trustees asked about parent input and alignment with Eastside Union High School, the feeder district; staff said alignment with the feeder high school and use of the rubric were part of the decision.
A motion to approve and adopt the recommended Algebra I curriculum passed on a voice vote. The district will proceed with adoption steps for implementation in the 2026–27 school year and coordinate with feeder-district partners on articulation.
