Police chief reports 269 calls in summer; community foundation funds tasers and cameras

Police Chief David Pernice summarized department activity for July and the period June 1–Aug. 13: the department handled 269 calls during that span, averaging about 3.63 calls per day, with incidents ranging from vehicle pursuits and PFAs to domestic incidents, drug activity and homelessness-related calls. He told council some calls can occupy an entire shift and cited recent incidents involving suicide and mental-health crises.
The chief said he and Officer Shelly attended Alert Active Shooter training July 24–25 and that he applied to the UC Community Foundation for funds to purchase four tasers and additional security cameras for North Main Street; the community foundation awarded both requests. The grant awards and training were described as beneficial to department readiness.
