Board directs staff to market two closed campuses after consultant presentation

The Berryessa Union Elementary School District Board met to review a consultant analysis of three surplus properties and directed staff to begin marketing two elementary campuses for lease.
Dan Merar of 3 d Strategies presented the findings, saying the firm had evaluated Birchwood, Cherrywood and the former district office on Piedmont Road and recommended that the district "take the properties to market for lease" to understand potential tenant interest before narrowing options. Merar told the board Birchwood is about 9.4 acres with roughly 38,740 square feet of permanent structures and about 20,000 square feet of modular buildings, and Cherrywood is roughly 9.6 acres with about 44,000 square feet of improvements.
Board members expressed general support for marketing Birchwood and Cherrywood while asking staff to be mindful of neighborhood impacts and to report back if viable tenants are not found within a year. One trustee emphasized that the district should be "first to market" to avoid losing prospects to nearby districts. The board also asked staff to continue exploring options for 1376 Piedmont Road, including potential zoning changes or district-led community uses.
The meeting opened with a procedural motion to adopt the agenda, which passed, and the board adjourned after the property discussion. The district plans next steps to return with additional information and potential timelines for outreach and entitlements.
