Board approves March bills, hires and personnel actions; unanimous votes on routine items

The Hill City School Board on April 28 approved routine finance and personnel items, including March 2025 bills totaling $407,770.40 and March receipts of $493,177.88. The bills’ fund breakdown included a General Fund charge of $318,665.87 and Food Service charges of $24,279.24. The motion to approve the March bills passed on a roll call vote of 6–0.
The board also approved current bills presented for payment through April 10, 2025 in the amount of $268,858.37 and accepted March receipts totaling $493,177.88 (General Fund $428,104.88; Food Service $43,610.28; Community Service $20,027.92; Debt Service $1,434.80). Clerk Joell Miranda handled roll calls for the consent motions. "This total includes: General Fund $318,665.87," the consent agenda materials state, and motions were moved, seconded and carried with all six members voting yea.
Beyond finance approvals, the board accepted donations of $500 from the Hill City Lions Club to SWARM for the senior class trip and $500 from the Hill City Thrift Store to the senior class. It recognized resignations from Ashley Nutter (paraprofessional), Sue Kallinen (dishwasher/cooks helper) and Stacey Johnson (Head Girls Basketball Coach). The board approved hiring Mark Gravelle as junior-high baseball coach, Joel Richards as assistant softball coach and Roger Thorson as junior-high softball coach under the district’s coaching contracts.
Personnel actions also included approving an increase for Heidi Haddix to a 1.0 FTE teacher for the 2025–26 school year and motions to nonrenew a probationary teacher and a Tier 1 teacher per the personnel resolutions presented. The board approved the AFSCME Letter of Understanding for van drivers for the remainder of the 2024–25 school year and several other contract and program motions.
All motions recorded in the April 28 consent and new business sections carried by recorded voice or roll-call votes; where tallies are reported in the transcript, they were unanimous (Yea: 6, Nay: 0).
