Chief Hale and others recognized Sergeant JC Mitchell for 10 years of service and noted Mitchell received a statewide honor — MADD North Carolina’s 2025 DWI enforcer award — after making 35 arrests during 2025 that the chief said removed suspected impaired drivers from roadways.
The board gave a long tribute to Roberta Thuman on her 25 years of service, highlighting her leadership in modernizing the town’s website, expanding the government access channel and social media presence, producing documentaries and her quiet work acquiring easements for beach nourishment. Colleagues described her as the town’s “face” for communications and praised her role in projects like beach nourishment.
Staff also recognized the retirement of Steve Symansky after more than 13 years as a building inspector and floodplain administrator, praising his technical knowledge of the North Carolina building code and steady reliability.
