Southern Kern Unified: community center hands out about 1,250 backpacks ahead of Aug. 12 school start

Superintendent Mrs. Gates told the board the district's parent community center has been distributing school supplies and preparing families for the new year. "They had 1,700 family members going through the parent community center, which led to giving away about 1,250 backpacks," she said, and urged parents who have not enrolled children to do so before classes begin Wednesday, Aug. 12.
Gates also described additional family resources at the center, including a stocked pantry and a new parent community garden where families can claim beds and plant. Board members praised the volunteer effort and encouraged community members to support the first home games, community garden participation and outreach to families.
