Students showcase electives and present handcrafted gifts during School Board Appreciation

At its Jan. 15, 2025, meeting, the Brookings-Harbor School Board heard students present elective-class projects and accepted recognition for School Board Appreciation Month.
Principal Vickie Nigh and teacher Matthew Bennett introduced two Azalea Middle School electives. In the video-production elective (led by Mr. Wagman), students learn broadcasting, segment creation, graphic design and original music production; students Frank and Liam described writing scripts and integrating music. In the fiber-arts elective (led by Ms. Legat), students Sarah, Sophia and Hazel demonstrated quilting and crocheting projects and credited a volunteer mentor, Shari, for hands-on support. Chair Jay Trost commended the students’ creativity and noted the potential for community partnerships using student-crafted items.
The board discussed using student-made coffee cups and coaster sets presented by high-school students Owen Kolp and Trent Adams as gifts for visiting staff and local-business partners. The student representative’s update also listed upcoming activities, including a Glow Crazy Dance on Feb. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. The presentations served both as curriculum highlights and as a conversation starter about strengthening ties between the district and local organizations.
