Public Works director outlines staffing cuts, proposes moving admin to highway garage

Public Works Director John told the board budget reductions eliminated three supervisory positions (the superintendent, one highway foreman and the parks foreman), requiring the department to change operations and to operate with fewer supervisors.
John proposed moving the public works administrative office to the highway garage at 210 East Street to suit current staffing and operational needs and said he plans to request a highway labor position in the next fiscal year to restore field capacity. "In order to complete the town's routine road drainage infrastructure maintenance, we need employees," he said.
He also noted a recent resignation in the highway department and said the vacancy posted is for a replacement of that role, not a reinstated eliminated position. John told the board he believes the department remains in good shape despite reductions.
