During public comment, resident Anastasia Zakara asked for an update on how the township spent its $5,000 allocation from a county opioid settlement last year and what the township intends to do with the current year's funds.
Staff replied that they were not immediately aware of the detailed allocation and would look into it, but clarified on the record that at least 70% of opioid-settlement funding must be used for opioid remediation: treatment, mitigation, or services addressing the effects of the opioid epidemic. "At least 70% of the funding has to be spent on opioid remediation," a staff member said, and staff suggested organizing a stakeholder discussion to consider education in schools, Narcan distribution, clean-needle services or coordinated EMS involvement.
Staff recommended a group of stakeholders meet to develop a plan and report back; the committee asked staff to research any audit or reporting requirements tied to the settlement funds.
