DeKalb County reopens Cedar Grove Bridge after $14.5 million SPLOST rebuild

DeKalb County officials on Aug. 6 celebrated the reopening of the Cedar Grove Bridge after a multi-year reconstruction funded by a $14,500,000 SPLOST allocation. The county CEO said the original bridge, built in 1965, could no longer meet modern transportation demands and that the project replaced the span, reconstructed roadway approaches, upgraded intersections and added sidewalks and improved drainage.
"It took a decade, actually, to get the agenda item," the county CEO said in opening remarks, thanking partners including the Georgia Department of Transportation, Norfolk Southern and Metro South CID. The CEO said the county sought a long-term solution rather than repeated repairs and emphasized minimizing disruptions with enhanced detour routes.
Commissioner Nicole Messiah (District 3) framed the work as both a safety improvement and an economic boost for South DeKalb, saying the bridge rebuild restores a key corridor for commerce and emergency response. Project program manager Chris Kingsbury described the technical complexity — water mains, fiber, utilities and railroad coordination — and credited multiple agencies and contractors for completing the work.
Officials said the SPLOST-funded work also included intersection upgrades and approach reconstructions aimed at improving truck routing and reducing wear on neighborhood streets. County leaders said some residents were displaced during the multi-year process and pledged better communication and faster project delivery on future work.
