District: Chenowith building costs driven by one‑time seismic upgrades

CFO Randy Anderson told the Budget Committee that the elevated per-student cost reported for Chenowith Elementary is primarily the result of one-time seismic capital upgrades rather than higher everyday operating spending. "This is largely due to seismic upgrades tied to that facility—totaling a couple of million dollars," Anderson said, adding that much of that work was supported by external grant funding and therefore was not paid entirely from the district’s general fund.
Anderson said that when those one-time capital expenses are removed from the calculation, Chenowith’s cost per student is within about $9 of Dry Hollow’s per-student figure. The explanation was presented to clarify apparent disparities between school sites and to show that capital projects can skew site-level cost comparisons.
