Medford School Board hears survey feedback on student cell-phone policy

District staff presented districtwide survey results and school procedures at a Nov. 18 town hall; the board will review the feedback at its Nov. 21 meeting and said a final decision is likely in December.
Medford School Board Chair Cynthia Wright opened a town-hall meeting Nov. 18 at North Medford High School and said the board "wanted to hear from stakeholders before making a decision on whether to change the policy." Superintendent Bret Champion reviewed the meeting format and turned the session over to district staff.
Deputy Superintendent Jeanne Grazioli summarized the district's existing student cell-phone policy and presented districtwide survey feedback collected from employees, parents or guardians, and students. Grazioli told attendees the presentation included the "top five suggestions" from each of those groups and asked participants to review the data packet and discuss priorities at table groups.
McLoughlin Middle School Principal Charity MacLeod, South Medford High School Principal Jon Lyons and Jacksonville Elementary Principal Shelly Inman described how their schools currently manage cell-phone use in emergencies and how parents can reach students during the school day. Attendees completed a table activity to identify their biggest takeaways; a representative from each table reported that group's feedback to the full meeting.
Chair Wright said the board will discuss the survey data and community feedback at the Board meeting on Nov. 21, and that a decision on any policy change would most likely not occur until December. Superintendent Champion told attendees that the slide presentation and supporting materials are available on the district website. The meeting adjourned at 6:32 p.m.
