District seeks up to $415,000 for summer learning; programs include Jumpstart kindergarten and targeted literacy

Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Bernal told the board North Wasco County SD 21 applied for eligibility to receive up to $415,000 in summer-learning funds and outlined proposed uses: Jumpstart Kindergarten at Colonel Wright, a K–8 summer literacy program (invitation-only with required pre- and post-assessments), 9–12 credit-recovery at The Dalles High School, a Migrant Summer Learning Program (Columbia Gorge ESD), preschool summer programming at Wahtonka, Native Culture Camp at Dry Hollow, STEM and 4-H camps, and out-of-district camp partnerships.
Dr. Bernal said the K–8 literacy offerings will be invitation-only to target students with literacy deficiencies and that pre- and post-assessment data will be required. The district also listed targeted workforce- and enrichment-focused camps (STEM, Resilience Rally follow-ups) and said the award, if received, will be used to staff and operate the listed programs this summer.
Board members were informed about coordination with regional partners such as Columbia Gorge ESD and OSU for specific offerings and that staff will report back on award confirmation and program rosters if the funds are received.
