Safe Routes to School project planned on West 10th with crosswalk flashers; construction targeted for summer

Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Bernal told the board the Safe Routes to School project is a joint effort with the city and includes new sidewalks along West 10th Street (from Hostetler to Floral) plus two new crosswalks—one across West 10th and another across Chenoweth Loop—each equipped with pedestrian-activated flashing signals.
A tentative construction schedule shared at the May 22 meeting lists a pre-construction meeting on May 29, staging beginning June 2, concrete pouring the week of July 24, asphalt work the week of Aug. 11, slurry the week of Aug. 18, striping the week of Aug. 25, and tentative completion on Aug. 29 (before the school year). The superintendent noted a potential grant opportunity in spring 2026 to extend sidewalks further along West 10th if additional funding becomes available.
Board members were informed that the district is coordinating with the city engineer and public-works director to finalize logistics and staging plans. Staff will report back as the project moves from pre-construction into active staging and work.
