Cooperative Extension director highlights award, soil-health work and Genesee Valley project

The Cornell Cooperative Extension director updated the Resource Management Committee on July activities, including master gardeners’ outreach at local festivals, a soil health day and work at the Genesee Valley Produce Auction. The director noted a staffing change at the Cornell vegetable team and said Judd Reid has been elevated to run the ag teams.
The director highlighted an award for horticulture educator Christian Acosta, saying he “went to the annual conference in order to accept an award” and that outside funds covered travel to accept the honor. The director also described a planned three-year composting project under the Ag in the Classroom program at Genesee Valley and discussed a Genesee Valley meal-sorting grant: “Genesee Valley is the 1 that, applied for the grant… If it goes well, yes. It will be, something that we hope to expand.” Committee members asked whether the meal-sorting program would expand to other schools; the director said the current funding belongs to Genesee Valley and expansion is contingent on the pilot’s success.
