District places Google community service fee in contingency, budgets seismic retrofit

The budget document includes an estimated $725,000 in revenue from a community service fee associated with Google’s new data center but the amount is placed entirely into contingency because the project's final size is unknown, CFO Randy Anderson told the committee.
"Because of the uncertainty, the full amount is placed in the contingency fund rather than allocated to specific expenses," Anderson said. The district also reported an existing annual distribution of about $240,000 tied to an earlier agreement with roughly five years remaining.
On capital projects, Anderson reported that roughly $2 million of the Other Funds category is designated for a seismic retrofit at Chenowith Elementary, and the district also noted a $500,000 EPA grant to mitigate hazardous materials at Chenowith. Planned projects funded through capital improvement funds include a football field press box upgrade, district radio purchases, and a $200,000 match for a Safe Routes to School sidewalk extension.
Committee members asked for clear documentation showing which projects are grant‑funded versus funded from contingency or local revenue. Anderson said dedicated funds (construction excise tax, building rentals, Google fee contingency) fund most planned capital work.
