High school closed last week after 57% of students were ill, superintendent says

Superintendent Erika Bare told the South Umpqua School District Board on Feb. 19 that the district closed the high school last week after a high rate of illness among students, with 57% of enrolled students absent on Monday and Tuesday — 250 of 440 students.
"We had to make the very difficult decision to close the high school last week due to the high rate of illness amongst students," Bare wrote in the superintendent's report. She said closure for that reason is highly unusual and that the district received press attention; she reported that all sites have returned to regular operations.
Board members acknowledged the closure during the work session; no formal board action was recorded in the work-session packet. The district said the closure covered a Monday and Tuesday when the high school’s absences peaked. The superintendent also noted the district is monitoring attendance and illness trends going forward.
