Superintendent Bare told the South Umpqua School District Board on April 2 that the district will move forward with a proposed schedule change to extend Wednesday early-release time by 45 minutes beginning in the 2025–26 school year. He said the change aligns with the district's strategic-plan pillars focused on student support and staff development and that the district will follow up with more details soon.
"I will be sending communication out to staff and the community in the next few days," Superintendent Bare said, summarizing the next step. He told the board that 238 families responded to the schedule survey and that responses on start times were evenly split, while about two-thirds of respondents agreed or were neutral on extending early-release time to provide more educator collaboration and professional development. Seventy-three educators completed the staff survey and returned similar responses, he said.
Board members asked for clarification about how the change will be implemented and how success will be measured as the leadership team maps priorities for 2025–26. Superintendent Bare said leaders will spend a day with a consultant to begin developing priority areas and indicators for success before staff and community communications go out.
