Dayton reports 24 demolitions in June; 121 properties removed year-to-date

Steve Gondal, director for the Department of Planning, Neighborhoods and Development, told the Dayton City Commission that the demolition program completed 24 demolitions in June and 121 demolitions so far this year, about 36% of the 334 properties planned.
Gondal said funding for the June work came primarily from the Ohio Department of Development and ARPA, with 20 June demolitions paid through ODOD funds and four through ARPA, and that 70 of 120 ARPA-funded demolitions are now complete. "In June we saw 24 demolitions, completed," Gondal said. He reported 68 post-abatement inspections during June, which staff said makes those properties ready for removal in the following months.
Commissioners asked about the cause of emergency demolitions in June. Gondal said he believed most were fire-related; Fire Chief French explained that crews used a "tactical burn" when interior operations became unsafe and that life safety is prioritized in such responses. The commission also discussed neighborhood distribution: staff reported demolitions were spread across 25 of Dayton's 65 neighborhoods, with concentrations in Santa Clara and Southern Dayton View.
