VDOT reports resurfacing, rumble‑strip changes and bridge deck delay for county roads

A VDOT representative told the board the summer maintenance season included mowing, gravel maintenance, pothole patching and debris removal, and that crews had surface treated 6 miles of roadway and resurfaced 13.30 miles this year with hot‑mix asphalt on sections of Route 231 and Route 211.
The VDOT official said a speed study on Hackleys Mill Road concluded the unposted 55 mph limit should be reduced to 50 mph and recommended new warning signage; after on-site review the representative agreed to re-study the limit in spring to see whether new driver behavior warrants further change. Residents and supervisors raised safety and fire-rescue vehicle concerns about rumble-strip noise on Route 231; VDOT agreed to pursue replacement of the milled centerline rumble strip with sinusoidal ("mumble") strips that studies show produce lower noise levels.
VDOT also reported a bridge-deck replacement on Holland Road (618) has been delayed until next summer because of steel availability and said preliminary engineering is underway on Turkey Ridge Road (1.8 miles scheduled for next summer). The update included an inventory of other rural-rustic projects and noted guardrail review requests along Route 522 near Chester Gap.
Board members thanked VDOT for responsiveness and asked for follow-up on the speed restudy, guardrail on Route 522, and the timeline for rumble‑strip replacement.
