Mr. Troy Saulsbury and Mrs. Caryn Saulsbury presented the Central Elementary Oregon Trail unit, detailing classroom preparations and a widely noticed reenactment event. The unit starts with Nebraska dough maps and culminates with students building wagons from shopping carts, receiving packing lists, and traveling portions of the route that include a stop at the Harmon Park rock garden.
The teachers emphasized the experiential learning goals: students act as families, record observations in journals and practice problem-solving and adaptability tied to Nebraska history. The board heard that the reenactment has attracted attention in local media and the community.
