Niskayuna CAC presses for updated noise code and limits on gas leaf blowers; town board outreach proposed

"The noise code itself was actually quite old, and it referenced compact discs and VCRs," Laura said, noting an update could include additional enforcement thresholds and escalating penalties.
Proponents argued a partial or staged restriction is feasible and pointed to Westchester and Long Island municipalities that moved from partial bans to broader restrictions. One member said, "These gas powered mowers are horrific for the environment, people's health, people's hearing." Opponents warned of landscaper pushback and operational challenges: contractors reported battery life for commercial electric equipment can be limiting and that battery-rotation or mobile charging solutions may be required. Members agreed to prepare a focused presentation for the Town Board or a prep meeting, gather resident support data and reach out to landscapers already using electric equipment as part of next steps.
