Board updates graduation policies to align with law and allow cultural items at ceremonies

The Board approved revisions to Policy IKF (graduation credit standards) and IKFB (graduation exercises) during its May 14 meeting to align district policy with recent legislative requirements and to clarify items allowed at ceremonies.
Director Maureen Callahan explained the proposed IKF revisions reflect new legislative requirements related to graduation credits and that the Administrative Rule previously accompanying the policy has been incorporated into the revised policy text. On IKFB, she said the primary change is to ensure consistency with state law and to clarify that students may wear items of cultural significance. "[The updated policy] permits students to wear Native American items of cultural significance, as well as military uniforms, during graduation ceremonies," Callahan said. Director Denise Wright emphasized the policy language is inclusive and allows items of cultural significance from any background.
Director Standley moved to adopt the IKFB revisions and Director Linn seconded; the motion passed unanimously. The Board also approved the IKF updates in the same action. The Board requested additional review materials and will continue monitoring how the revised rules are applied in practice.
