On questions about balancing college readiness with career and technical education, Sean Lively described a model that tightly couples dual‑enrollment offerings with workplace internships. He said at his prior school he partnered with Lawrence Tech University to offer college credit courses while arranging job‑shadowing or internships at Henry Ford Hospital for students in health programs.
"So say we had a student in our science and medicine program that wanted to be a nurse. They would be enrolled in dual enrollment nursing 101 at Lawrence Tech, and then they would also have the opportunity to job shadow or internship at Henry Ford Hospital," Lively said. He added that the partnership produced scholarship opportunities from the postsecondary partner and positioned students ahead in credit accumulation.
Lively argued that tightly coupling postsecondary credit with workplace experience builds attendance, engagement and a college‑going culture — outcomes he said improved attendance and reduced chronic absenteeism at his prior school.
