PBIS presenters tell board suspension days fell 15.7% — presenters say more granular data will guide interventions

Presenters from the district PBIS team reviewed three years of discipline data and said suspension days declined by 15.7, which they quantified as about 710.5 suspension days saved districtwide. "So from 2324 to 2425, we saw 15.7% reduction in suspension days. So we saved 710.5 suspension days," a presenter said.
The presentation also showed expulsions increased by nine compared with the earlier year, and presenters cautioned that fewer suspensions does not mean fewer serious incidents — some behaviors have become more severe and are handled with appropriate severity. Presenters said they will use Kickboard and PowerSchool data to examine incidents at the student and teacher level and to deploy restorative practice coordinators where recurring moderate-contact behaviors appear.
Board members pressed on whether some cases that should have been escalated to the board were not and asked for a follow-up work session to review how cases are routed through the discipline process. Presenters said they could not, in the moment, review every expulsion case but promised more granular data and further analysis in a requested follow-up session.
