Monroe superintendent says 5–6 redesign largely in place; district reports $161,000 spent so far

Superintendent Shaw told the board at Monday's special work session that the bulk of the 5–6 redesign moves have been completed and staff are returning rooms to teachers ahead of the school year. "Right now, all the moves as of right now have been moved, readjusted, and sent back to the respective locations for staff," Shaw said.
Shaw and operations staff described packed staging areas (gyms and cafeterias) used during the June moves, carpet and waxing work, and a schedule that should allow many teachers to access classrooms before students return. District staff said furniture deliveries requiring vendor installation were scheduled for the coming Friday and that technology equipment had been purchased, delivered and largely tested.
District staff provided line-item spending tied to the redesign: $33,630 charged May 3 for work at Arborwood South including speakers and new projectors, roughly $45,000 for work at Waterloo, and a total to date of $161,000 on redesign-related items. "Out of that number, there's $45,000 that was part of the work at Waterloo," Shaw said when summarizing the spreadsheet the board had seen.
Board members asked follow-up questions about what equipment was replaced versus remounted. Facilities staff explained that where ceiling and structural work made re-installation impractical — as at Waterloo — the district installed interactive boards; in a subset of Arborwood South rooms it remounted projectors because that was cheaper and preserved consistency for teachers who move between rooms. "Instead of doing that, since we were gonna take everything out of the ceiling... what we decided was just to put an interactive smart board on the wall," a district technician said.
Superintendent Shaw said the board would be taken on a district walkthrough later in the week to inspect buildings and monitor the remaining punch-list items. The district will provide the board an updated progress chart and deliver a more detailed spending reconciliation when auditors finish the monthly close.
