Staff explains new Education Code stipend and how it affects trustee pay
Summary
MCOE staff told trustees the statewide trustee stipend will be $800 per month starting Jan. 1, 2026, and could rise to $1,000 monthly if Marin County’s attendance classification moves from class 5 to class 4; the bylaw allows members to decline the payment.

John Wentz told the board the county's bylaw language is aligned to California Education Code changes and that the governor updated trustee compensation. "Currently, I believe that there is a fee for participation as a board member... that amount increased over $800," Wentz said, adding the change takes effect on Jan. 1, 2026. He explained that if Marin County moves from class 5 to class 4 (about 800 more average daily attendees), the monthly stipend could increase to $1,000.
Wentz emphasized the bylaw does not require a board member to accept compensation; members can opt out. Trustees asked procedural questions about how acceptance would be tracked (onboarding and voluntary opt-in were discussed). No formal action was taken; staff said they would notify trustees if classification or compensation changes occur.
