County staff maps 6,000 local business records from Secretary of State questionnaire

Brian (EDA staff) said about 6,000 businesses in Sherburne County filled out the snapshot responses and that roughly half of those are part‑time ventures or LLCs not operating full time in the county. He said the dataset omits government employers and large chains with headquarters outside the county; the map uses interior colors to show reported revenue bands and outside colors to indicate township vs. city location.
Brian told the board that approximately 300 respondents reported more than $1,000,000 in revenue and that many of those higher‑revenue firms appear in township areas. He noted data cleaning challenges—addresses that show a company's registered headquarters versus actual operations—and said he plans quarterly updates and additional line‑by‑line cleaning to improve accuracy.
Members discussed using the dataset for planning, partner outreach and to identify businesses that could move from part‑time to full employers; Brian said he has already shared the map with city economic development staff, chambers of commerce and local partners.
