The Environmental Commission learned that the borough's leaf-composting costs have more than doubled, prompting DPW to explore options to reduce expense and increase capacity. Pat Mason said the department is considering reestablishing a composting facility at the prior site and adding a compactor to hold more volume; any option would require ongoing compliance with numerous New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection rules, and Mason said he is meeting with the DEP to assess which approaches would be approved.
Commissioners discussed trade-offs between cost, space and regulatory burden. The commission did not adopt a formal recommendation at the Feb. 19 meeting but will follow Mason's discussions with the DEP before considering changes to town operations or capital investments.
