A school administrator told the board Grama High has ‘‘an 80% attendance rate, which means that a large number of your students are missing almost 0.25 of their education,’’ and said the donor offered $1,500 plus additional gift cards for food or gas to support incentives. Board members questioned whether school assemblies or outreach from a church-affiliated organization would cross legal lines; the presenter and the superintendent repeatedly clarified the group was offering only financial incentives and that no proselytizing would occur in school activities.
Superintendent (staff) recommended approving the donation as a support for attendance incentives; the motion was moved by Mister Jaramillo and seconded by Francie Lee. The board approved the measure by voice vote. The board asked staff to frame the action explicitly as ‘‘support for attendance incentives’’ rather than a formal partnership, to reduce confusion about church-and-school boundaries.
The decision follows district emphasis on attendance as part of its strategic plan and early-year efforts to recruit students back to classrooms. The school will use the donated funds and the additional cards to incentivize regular attendance, according to the presentation.
