WESLACO ISD board outlines plan to erase this year’s deficit using bond interest and reclassified funds
Summary
Trustees were told a one‑time reclassification of $7.0 million in construction funds and a $14.1 million bond‑interest transfer would free $21.1 million to eliminate the district’s current fiscal‑year shortfall while staff develops structural fixes for next year’s projected gap.

At a budget workshop the WESLACO ISD Board of Trustees reviewed preliminary 2025–26 figures showing a potential operating shortfall and a staff proposal to use one‑time resources to clear this year’s gap.
“And these numbers do not include food service,” Andili Rodriguez, the district’s budget presenter, said, summarizing the analysis: “we're at at that ADA of 14,278 revenues or expenditures, looking at a deficit of 17,700,000 there.” Rodriguez told trustees the administration proposes transferring $14.1 million of bond interest into the general fund and reclassifying a $7.0 million HVAC construction allocation back to unassigned fund balance. “So that 7,000,000 will now be unassigned and transferred back to fund balance, giving us a total of 21,100,000,” she said.
Trustees pressed staff on whether those are recurring solutions. Several board members said the $21.1 million is a one‑time fix and stressed the need for structural changes to avoid repeating deficits next year. The administration acknowledged that the infusion will wipe out the current shortfall but that the district still faces a recurring challenge in 2026–27 driven largely by salary and benefit pressures.
The board directed staff to develop dollarized reduction options and revenue measures for the next workshop scheduled for June 8, with final budget adoption now planned for June 22. Staff said they will return with more detailed, audited figures before trustees vote to adopt the budget.
