Council rejects request to ask county for lower speed limit on Mountain Avenue

Councilman Arthur Rees moved on May 26 to ask the County of Essex to reduce the speed limit on Mountain Avenue, saying the current limit dated to 1978 and that changes in development, lack of sidewalks and more visitors to Walker Park justify a reduction.
Council President Anthony Floria-Callori and other members said they supported public safety but expressed concern the record lacked supporting traffic data and analysis. The council discussed the potential for traffic education measures such as sign boards.
The motion (Resolution R-105-2026) was defeated by a 4–3 vote. Councilmen Matthew Atlas and Tilton, Councilwoman Johanna Stroever and Council President Floria-Callori voted no; Councilman Rees and Councilwoman Suzanne Corbo and Councilman Tilton voted yes (transcript records a 3–4 outcome in favor of defeat). The council did not direct staff to prepare additional traffic studies at that meeting.
