Council weighs add-a-depot model; local redemption centers urge caution

Andrew Mayer described a bag-tag drop-off depot model for container redemption and asked the council for a roughly 10-by-24-foot location and electricity to host a depot. "Ultimately looking to bring with our in our certified and more more redundant centers, to Charles City," Mayer said, and he said the company handles the software and customer service while asking the city only for space and minimal electrical support.
Local owner Nathan King, owner of All County Redemption, introduced himself and urged the council to support local redemption centers, noting his operation serves as a community meeting place and that local businesses provide hands-on service. Other residents and council members raised concerns about subsidizing electricity for one private business and recommended giving a local entrepreneur time to establish operations before approving a city-supported drop box. The council suggested monitoring the new local operator for a six-month period and then revisiting whether to provide any subsidy or formal partnership.
No formal subsidy or contract was approved at the meeting; staff and council said they would gather more information on locations, logistics and impacts on existing redemption centers before a budget decision.
