Officials say citations for 'family' ordinance can include fines, jail and require occupants to relocate
Summary
Committee heard that ordinance violations may result in fines (up to $1,000), up to six months in jail or both, and that who is cited (tenant vs. owner) varies by case; some cited occupants ultimately relocated, often at semester end.

Committee members asked what penalties follow proven ordinance violations. An official recalled that penalties for comparable municipal code violations can include fines "up to 1000 dollars and up to 6 months in bail or a combination of that," with the final sanction ultimately decided by a municipal court judge.
Code Enforcement said that in cited cases occupants sometimes had to move out โ in multiple examples this happened at the end of an academic semester โ and that whether the tenant or the property owner receives a citation depends on who knew of or facilitated the violation. If the owner signed the lease and knowingly allowed nonrelated occupants, enforcement may cite the owner; if tenants knowingly violated the rule the citation may go to individuals.
