Morgan County proclaims September 2026 as "Goes Purple" month to support recovery

The Morgan County Commission on Aug. 5 voted to proclaim September 2026 as "Morgan County Goes Purple," a local observance aligned with a statewide recovery-awareness initiative. The motion to adopt the proclamation passed by voice vote and commissioners signed the document for distribution.

A regional purple ambassador, representing the West Virginia Goes Purple movement and the Hope Dealer Project, told the commission the campaign seeks to "replace stigma with compassion" and to encourage community engagement during National Recovery Month. The ambassador said the statewide effort unites all 55 counties and urged residents, businesses and organizations to "wear purple, participate in awareness efforts, and help us continue spreading this message across West Virginia." The proclamation calls on citizens to observe the month with education and community events.

Commissioners framed the proclamation as symbolic, intended to raise awareness and highlight local nonprofit supports. The chair noted local nonprofits such as Life of Drugs and the Morgan County Partnership provide early education and services for residents seeking help. The proclamation was signed at the meeting and copies will be provided to organizers; commissioners said they will coordinate with local partners to publicize events.

The action does not create formal program funding; it directs community outreach and encourages voluntary participation by civic groups and service providers.
