District staff proposed creating paid internship positions for Master of Social Work (MSW) students to help build the district’s social work workforce and support students and families affected by recent emergencies.
Mr. Slobodnick (speaker 11) told the board the positions would be structured as daily substitute roles (no benefits) so MSW interns could complete university hours while working in schools, and that current social workers would supervise interns. "If they worked every single day, it'd be about 26,000," he said when asked about maximum cost; he added that the district does not expect interns to work every day and that the arrangement is cost‑effective compared with other staffing models.
Board members asked about licensing requirements and scheduling; staff said interns would need a three‑year substitute license and that the district has an intern now who will complete 500 hours from September to December. The board thanked staff for the proposal and posed no objections to piloting the program.
