The Weslaco ISD Board of Trustees began its meeting with a series of recognitions for students, coaches and teachers across the district. Elias Trevino led the awards segment, announcing accomplishments that ranged from math state qualifiers to first‑place mariachi and district athletic championships.
Among the highlights, B. Garza Middle School increased its state competition qualifiers from three last year to seven this year in the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association meet, Weslaco High School’s Mariachi Pantera won first place in the South Texas mariachi competition, and the district reported back‑to‑back district titles for both boys' and girls' golf teams. The board also recognized Marlene Montemayor, a senior who earned a $1,000 scholarship and was one of 12 statewide to take a color guard championship at the Texas Educators Color Guard Association contest.
Trustees also announced district support and funding wins. Elias Trevino told the board that the technology department, led by Carlos Martinez, secured nearly $1,000,000 in grants for technology improvements, including more than $500,000 in E‑Rate funding to protect network equipment from power surges and roughly $50,000 for internal fiber replacement at specific campuses. Trevino said the district had also received over $400,000 from a cybersecurity pilot program to enhance ransomware protections across campuses.
"We are very proud to have these students represent Weslaco ISD at the state level," Trevino said during the presentations, calling attention to the breadth of student success.
The recognitions concluded with applause for teachers, coaches and families; board members and staff encouraged continued support for student extracurricular and academic achievement as the school year closes.
