Glen Cove parent urges board to reverse special-education staffing move, proposes joint parent–district committee

Jackie Martinez, who identified herself and her address during public participation, criticized the district’s initial special-education placement plan and the way it was presented to families.
"They created a plan that looked good on paper, but didn't take the individuals into account," Martinez said, describing how her son regressed when his classroom and supports were separated across buildings. She said after advocating he was returned to an 8:1:1 with his current teacher and that the change had dramatically improved his progress: "He's reading, writing, and making friends with everyone."
Martinez urged the board to reconsider the district’s staffing choices, specifically asking that her son’s teacher be rehired, and proposed forming a committee of parents, responsible administrators and board members to collaborate on a solution that would prevent similar disruptions in the future.
The district’s presenters had already indicated they revised the plan after gathering staff and family feedback and scheduled a follow-up family meeting on June 9 to provide additional details and answer questions.
