Palos Heights committee approves emergency repairs after 13 watermain breaks

At the City of Palos Heights Water and Sewer Committee meeting on Feb. 24, Chairman Brennan said the committee would approve payments to respond to a run of system failures caused by multiple breaks.
Public Works Director Joe Smith reported, “There have been 13 watermain breaks to date.” Committee members approved an emergency payment to Airy’s Inc. for replacement of a 12" cross and installation of a new valve at 12650 S. 76th Avenue in the amount of $21,045.65 after Smith described a leak at 127th and 76th Avenue that required outside assistance. The committee later approved a $5,203.57 payment to Airy’s for emergency bypass work on Southwest Highway and a $5,711.24 payment for a fire hydrant replacement at 6232 W. 127th Pl.; all motions passed unanimously on voice votes.
The approvals were presented as immediate operational responses: the sanitary force main blockage on Southwest Highway was reported cleared, and the hydrant replacement was raised as necessary because crews were stretched thin by the number of breaks. Committee members said the expenditures were required to restore and maintain water service and hydrant functionality while in-house resources remained limited.
The committee recorded the motions with movers and seconders on the record: Chairman Brennan moved the payments and Alderman McGrogan or Alderman Begley seconded the respective motions, each passing on a voice vote.
