Overland Park midyear update highlights transportation, sustainability and rising housing permits

Laurie Curtis Luther, the city’s senior manager, presented the 2026 midyear strategic goals update to the Overland Park Community Development Committee on Aug. 5, outlining progress on transportation, sustainability and housing.
Luther said the city "welcomed global visitors and residents alike hosting 6 events in Overland Park with over 6,000 total participants," and highlighted implementation steps for the active transportation plan, including a benchmarking trip to Bentonville and a forthcoming RFP. She reported the city’s bike-share program with Bike Share KC recorded 271 trips in two months and that 25 new electric vehicle charging ports are now activated.
The presentation also covered facilities and programming milestones: Clock Tower Landing opened on time and on budget, the quality-of-life dashboard will launch by year-end and the solid waste study has been completed. On housing, Luther said single-family permits through July totaled 198 — 24 more than the prior year — and multifamily permits were 315, up from 143 in the same period last year.
Committee members praised the report’s detail and suggested the city publicize successes more widely. Chair Holly Grommer thanked staff and invited additional print copies for the governing body. Luther said the update is intended to be an annual report to track progress and guide upcoming priorities.
Next steps: staff will finalize materials for distribution to the governing body and continue work on the active transportation RFP and the quality-of-life dashboard.
