Council approves curb‑cut variance, sets driveway ordinance for public hearing

The Grundy Center City Council on Sept. 16 approved Resolution 2024‑57 granting a variance to Dylan Ross of 1510 Laurel Ave. to allow a driveway curb cut up to 42 feet. Council amended the motion to increase the variance to a maximum of 42 feet; the amendment and the resolution carried with five ayes.
The council also voted to publish Ordinance 578 — Chapter 141.04 Driveway Requirements — for a public hearing on Oct. 7, 2024. Building Inspector Darrel Shuey agreed that 42 feet is large enough for the proposed allowance. Councilmember Kuester cautioned that curb cuts wider than that could restrict on‑street parking adjacent to parcels.
Both actions were moved, seconded and approved without recorded opposition. The ordinance will return for a formal public hearing on Oct. 7.
