The Farmington City Council received a presentation from public safety staff on a recent police-department restructuring that created an assistant chief position and split supervision responsibility across two lieutenant posts.
Assistant Chief Cooper thanked the council and staff for creating the role that, he said, allows "more eyes on processes, procedures," and makes it easier to ensure officers "have what they need." The changes also opened promotional opportunities: the city promoted two lieutenants and several sergeants after an internal testing process, presentations and staff surveys.
Lieutenant Hanson, who was introduced by staff as the officer in charge of support services, described the selection and transition as difficult but valuable. "It was a rigorous process. I've lost way way too much sleep and way too much weight," Hanson said, and added that the change has been an opportunity for professional growth.
Sergeants who were promoted said they appreciated the council's investment in compensation and recruitment, and staff noted the restructure was intended to improve recruitment, retention and day-to-day oversight. The council and department took a group photograph to mark the personnel update; no formal action was required of council beyond receiving the presentation.
