Mayor Ryan Jolly opened a public hearing at the Feb. 23 Moulton Town Council meeting on a request for Dollar General to sell off‑premise alcohol at 13873 Market Street. The hearing followed the council’s approval of minutes from the Jan. 26 meeting.
Several residents spoke against the proposal. Larry Lang said he has been a long‑time local resident and objected to a liquor outlet so close to local schools. Harold Little told the council to “please keep into consideration the location of the building and how many schools are located around the building,” warning that alcohol sales could increase traffic at an already congested intersection. Maxine Gillespie said, “Moulton has a certain quality of life now and finds that alcohol sales could affect this quality,” and asked whether the sale could be stopped. Mayor Ryan Jolly clarified the hearing related only to off‑premise alcohol sales at the Dollar General location currently at 13873 Market Street and noted no representatives from Dollar General were present to comment.
Councilman Chris Proctor asked those opposed to raise their hands; nine audience members did so. Mayor Jolly then closed the public hearing and left the matter for future council consideration.
