Amy Palmer requested a permit for a small bonfire for family and friends, seeking the event slot on a Saturday evening and asking to move the requested location from Simmons Island to the Southport Beach House for easier parking.
"Just a small bonfire for s'mores," Palmer said, noting organizers would obtain a permit from the fire department. Commissioners discussed surface differences between Southport (sandier) and Simmons (stony) beaches, and staff said the fire department must sign off on the request. The commission approved the change of venue and the permit with the condition that the fire department sign off before the event.
Organizers said they received a fire-department form to complete and will follow that process before holding the event.
