Natomas Unified honors teachers of the year and launches Hispanic Heritage month programming

The Natomas Unified Board of Trustees paused regular business to recognize site teachers of the year and to present the district teacher of the year honors. Assistant Superintendent Dan Motherstar introduced each site winner and invited winners to take photos with trustees and Superintendent Castillo before a reception in the foyer.
Motherstar introduced more than a dozen teachers and named Sabrina Prochu, a 2 Rivers Elementary teacher, as the district teacher of the year. "Miss Prochu is described as a ray of sunshine in the hall, staff lounge, and office of 2 Rivers," Motherstar said as he listed accomplishments that led to the honor.
The meeting also previewed the district’s Hispanic Heritage Month programming (Sept. 15–Oct. 15). Executive Director Deidra Powell outlined a Stories We Weave series of personal narratives the district will gather and display as part of a quilt project to be shown at a multicultural festival next spring. Powell said the district will run an art contest with winners receiving age‑appropriate books to support literacy.
Superintendent Castillo remarked on classroom visits and the importance of celebrating teachers. "We are so honored and proud to recognize your exemplary work tonight," Castillo said.
