County parks staff told the Pender County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 3 that Phase 1 of Central Pender Park opened to the public earlier that day.
Zach, the parks presenter, described the amenities now available to residents: multipurpose fields usable for football, soccer and lacrosse; a sports-theme playground; picnic shelters; and a walking path around Phase 1. He said construction on the concession stand and restroom building remains under way and staff expect those elements finished within the next few weeks. Zach said a formal ribbon-cutting will follow later this fall.
When commissioners asked how the new turf and seeding were holding up after recent heavy rain, Zach said the site has about 3.5 inches of rain over two days but is “holding up” thanks to sod and recent seeding; a contractor will return the next morning to address a single issue identified during the opening. Zach also said fall soccer is scheduled to begin Aug. 17 at the new park.
