Johns Creek staff: council merged construction appeals into zoning board; two specialists to be added for building-code matters

City staff notified the Board of Zoning Appeals that the city council recently approved an ordinance merging the construction board of appeals with the Board of Zoning Appeals, adding two members to sit specifically on building-code appeals and variances.
Staff said the change is narrowly scoped: the two additional members would participate only on matters related to building-code variances or appeals, while ordinary zoning matters will continue to be heard by the seven regular board members. “Council has moved to not necessarily dissolve the construction board of appeals, but merged the construction board of appeals with the board of zoning appeals,” staff said. Appointments by the mayor are still pending, and staff told the board this is intended to provide technical expertise when trade- or code-specific appeals arise; staff also said the change is unlikely to affect the board’s routine zoning work because building-code appeals are rare in the city’s history.
The board had no substantive disagreement on the change. Staff said they will notify the board when the mayor makes the appointments and that the ordinance took effect following the council action earlier in the week.
