The Red Oak ISD Board of Trustees on Sept. 16 voted to name the district’s second middle school "Dr. Joy Shaw Middle School." Trustee Johnny Knight moved the naming, Brian Sebring seconded, and the motion passed 6–1, with Trustee Michelle Porter casting the lone dissenting vote.
After the initial vote, Trustee Michelle Porter moved to name the school "Michelle Carter Middle School," but the motion received no second and therefore failed. The naming decision was recorded as formal board action in the minutes.
