District previews $41–43M Sunnyvale Middle School Increment 2 modernization

District facilities staff presented the scope and schedule for Increment 2 of the Sunnyvale Middle School modernization. The presenter described the Student Union building, the 6th-grade classroom wing (12 classrooms, two collaboration rooms, restrooms and staff offices), a large academic courtyard and a multi-use Student Union with a new kitchen and servery. The presentation noted an "11,000 square foot outdoor covered eating area with 50 tables that can accommodate over 200 students."
Staff said Division of State Architect reviews have delayed final approval; "we expect to have final DSA approval at the beginning of July," the presenter said, and added that preliminary cost estimates for Increment 2 are "between 41 and $43,000,000". Staff said they will return May 5 with updated renderings and a proposed amendment to the guaranteed maximum price for board approval.
