Comprehensive land‑use plan work continues after strong public turnout

The council heard a planning update from director Scott and from Commissioner Lori Zoller about the county’s comprehensive land‑use planning process. Scott said public outreach is producing strong turnout—White Salmon had more than 100 attendees—and that the planning team is collecting notes and preparing a discussion draft rather than a final product this spring.
Scott warned a final plan by June is unlikely because several chapters remain unresolved and community input must be integrated; he said the state comp‑plan manager is satisfied with a preliminary draft. Community council representatives will meet with planning staff on April 9 to follow up, and Jeff Hunter volunteered to draft the parks and recreation chapter and bring it back for committee review.
Members raised questions about how sub‑area plans will relate to a county‑wide adoption and about the county’s duty to consult with the Yakama Nation; Zoller said formal consultations have occurred historically and that the county is working to reestablish routine updates with the tribe.
